He is outside where the air lets him breathe without worrying [1], but someone is there who worries for him and to him [2].
A sour taste touches Jumper’s tongue,
(or is formed there by
spittle turned sour)
and a tingling crawls up his neck.
The air is no longer cool.
He escapes back into the building [3].
[3] It was a mistake to go outside when clearly the answers are within, however hidden they may seem.
[2] The Whimpering creature huddles,
burying its neck deep in
its shoulders; and looks always
down at the ground [2a].
[2a] Jumper is apologized to profusely by (yet another??)
creature who seems to know him well, but who Jumper is
certain he has never met.
[1] It is quiet outside the Building. (Soothing in its own way.)
Jumper appreciates the clarity of the interpretation [1a] [1b]
of the scene out here.
[1a] that circle is the mother’s grin
[1b] that stretch, a line of marching men
and dirt under his fingernails. and roots like rings around his knuckles. and a turtleneck, the only new-looking thing about him, in a familiar purplish hue, pulled up flush to his chin.
